The Benrinnes distillery was built on the shoulder of its mountain namesake 700 feet above sea level, the distillery was first founded sometime in the 1820s, but this original building was washed away in the great flood of 1829. Rebuilt for what is hopefully the last time in the 1950s, Benrinnes has been adding the sherry-like qualities to blends for over half a century.åÊThe water used to create this whisky runs down the granite hills, over mossy banks and through gravel beds, filtered and cooled by nature and delivered to the distillery. Here it is transformed into something deliciously dark, and quite unlike the usual fruity, fresh notes fans ofåÊSpeysideåÊwhiskies will recognise.åÊUnited Distillers started the Flora & Fauna series in 1992 which consisted of 26 different single malts. Originally the range did not have a name. However the late whisky writer Michael Jackson nicknamed it the “Flora and Fauna” because of the various depictions on the labels.
